Two Arrested in Smith River Drug and Firearm Investigation

Del Norte County deputies say a July 9 search uncovered suspected narcotics, cash, a firearm and illegal fireworks.

SMITH RIVER, Calif. — Two Smith River residents were arrested Thursday after deputies served a search warrant at a home on Fred Haight Drive, according to the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies, assisted by officers from Pelican Bay State Prison, served the warrant July 9 in the 2400 block of Fred Haight Drive.

Nine people were located at the residence when law enforcement arrived. Following a search of the home and surrounding property, deputies arrested 34-year-old Mariah Bowers-Owens and 37-year-old Jose Lopez, both of Smith River.

The two were booked into the Del Norte County jail on multiple felony and misdemeanor allegations involving narcotics sales, possession of narcotics while armed with a firearm, possession of illegal fireworks, child endangerment and maintaining a place where narcotics are sold.

The Sheriff’s Office released a photo showing bags of suspected narcotics, bundled cash, a handgun and packaged fireworks reportedly seized during the investigation.

No additional information was immediately released about the other people found at the residence or the quantities and types of suspected drugs recovered.
