MEDFORD, Ore. — Rogue X will become a giant outdoor canvas Saturday as Chalk About Medford returns with sidewalk art, prizes and a free movie under the summer sky.

The annual Medford Parks and Recreation event was originally scheduled for June 27 but postponed because of a rainy forecast. It will now take place Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rogue X, 901 Rossanley Drive.

Participants will receive chalk and a 4-by-5-foot sidewalk square where they can create their own temporary work of art. The event is open to youth and adults, with registration costing $25 per square for ages 13 and older and $15 for children 12 and younger.

Artists will have most of the day to complete their designs before judging begins immediately after the competition closes at 4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice in both youth and adult divisions.

The format gives experienced artists and first-time chalk creators the same basic ingredients: a patch of pavement, a box of color and several hours to turn an ordinary sidewalk into something memorable.

Families can stay at Rogue X after the chalk competition for music, activities and food, which will be free for the first 200 attendees. The evening will continue with a free showing of the animated movie “Hoppers” as part of the Movies in the Park series.

The movie is scheduled for approximately 8:30 p.m. at the Rogue X splash pad and will begin at dusk. “Hoppers,” rated PG, follows a teenager who uses new technology to enter the animal world through a robotic beaver.

Movies in the Park events also include pre-show children’s activities, event giveaways and a free gift-basket raffle. Admission to the movie is free, and families may attend even if they do not participate in the chalk competition.

Registration remains required for anyone who wants a sidewalk square. Additional information and registration are available through Medford Parks, Recreation and Facilities.
