Jefferson Daily News
Policies

Jefferson Daily News is committed to clear, useful, independent journalism for Southern Oregon and Northern California.

These policies explain how we work, how we use sources, how we handle corrections, how sponsorships are separated from editorial coverage, and what readers can expect from us.

Editorial Independence

Jefferson Daily News is locally owned and independent.

Jefferson Daily News is part of Jefferson Media Group and is owned and operated by Gailey Company LLC. We are not owned by a national newspaper chain, political organization, government agency, advocacy group, or public media organization.

Editorial decisions are made by the newsroom. Sponsors, partners, sources, donors, agencies, businesses, and outside organizations do not decide what we cover, how we cover it, or what we publish.

Sponsorships help support our work, but they do not buy news coverage.

Sourcing & Accuracy

We work to publish information that is accurate, clear, and based on reliable sources.

Whenever possible, we use primary sources such as official press releases, public records, court documents, agency statements, meeting materials, direct communication, and verified public information.

When a story is developing, we aim to be clear about what is confirmed, what is still unknown, and where readers can find official updates.

We do not knowingly publish rumors, speculation, or unverified claims as fact.

Quotes

Quotes are published as accurately as possible and are not changed to alter their meaning.

We may make minor formatting adjustments for readability, such as removing extra spaces, correcting obvious transcription marks, or trimming unrelated material, but we do not rewrite a person’s words to make them say something different.

Corrections Policy

When we confirm a factual error, we correct it as soon as possible.

Depending on the error, we may update the story, add a correction or clarification note, or provide additional context. Our goal is to be transparent with readers while keeping the public record accurate.

Readers may report possible errors through the contact page. Please include the article link, the specific concern, and any official source or documentation that can help us review the issue.

News, Commentary, and Opinion

Jefferson Daily News separates news reporting from opinion or commentary.

News stories are written to be factual, source-based, and fair. Opinion, commentary, or personal perspective pieces will be clearly labeled so readers understand the difference.

Our news coverage is written to maintain a neutral, non-partisan tone.

Community Standards

Jefferson Daily News welcomes thoughtful conversation and respectful disagreement.

Comments may be removed or hidden on our website or social media pages if they include hate speech, harassment, personal attacks, threats, spam, misinformation presented as fact, foul language, or promotional content.

Moderation decisions are made to keep discussion constructive, useful, and safe for the community.

For more detail, please see our Social Media Policy.

Use of Suspect Images

Jefferson Daily News follows Oregon law regarding the release of booking photos and identifiable suspect images before conviction, including ORS 133.870.

Under Oregon law, law enforcement agencies may limit, alter, or withhold booking photos unless there is a clear public safety reason for release.

In many cases, images provided by law enforcement may already be blurred, altered, or withheld by the originating agency. Jefferson Daily News does not unblur or restore those images. We may crop images for layout or clarity, but we do not alter them in a way that changes the meaning of the image.

All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Jefferson Daily News may use digital tools, including artificial intelligence, to assist with editing, formatting, organization, research support, and workflow efficiency.

We do not use artificial intelligence to replace editorial judgment, reporting, verification, or fact-checking.

Published content is reviewed by a human editor before publication.

Sponsored Content & Advertising

Sponsorships help support Jefferson Daily News and keep our regional news free to read.

Sponsored content, paid partnerships, or promotional material will be clearly labeled when present. Jefferson Daily News does not publish paid promotional content as regular news without disclosure.

Sponsors do not control editorial decisions, story selection, headlines, reporting, or publishing outcomes.

Jefferson Daily News respects reader privacy. We do not sell personal information. Website analytics, cookies, and similar tools may be used to understand readership trends, improve site performance, and better serve our audience.

Transparency & Accountability

Trust is earned through consistency, accuracy, and transparency. Our goal is to serve Southern Oregon and Northern California with journalism that is useful, fair, and rooted in verified information.

When we make a mistake, we work to correct it. When information changes, we work to update it. When readers have questions, we want them to know how to reach us.
