The Hole in the Ground Fire remains 83 acres and is now 50% contained, with no new growth reported overnight.

Crews have completed hose lay around the fire perimeter and will continue mop-up operations today. Smoke may remain visible from the surrounding area as heavy fuels continue to burn inside the fire.

Fire managers ask the public to avoid using Forest Service Road 3100-200 to access the Hole in the Ground recreation area for firefighter and public safety.


NORTHERN LAKE COUNTY, Ore. — Fire crews are continuing to secure the Hole in the Ground Fire after the wildfire held at 83 acres overnight near Hole in the Ground Vista Point on the Deschutes National Forest.

According to Central Oregon Fire Info, the fire started Friday, July 4, at about 4:28 p.m. approximately one mile west of Hole in the Ground Vista Point. The cause remains under investigation.

As of the latest update Sunday morning, the fire was listed at 83 acres with 0% containment. Officials said crews established dozer line around 100% of the fire’s perimeter overnight. Firefighters are expected to continue mopping up and securing the line around the fire’s footprint Sunday.

 
 

The fire is burning in mixed timber and sage. The nearest structure is about one-quarter mile from the fire area, according to fire officials.

Interagency resources assigned to the fire include one hotshot crew, three engines, one dozer, two water tenders and one hand crew.

The response is being coordinated through Central Oregon Fire Management Service, with multiple agencies working together on suppression and prevention patrols across Central Oregon. Visitors and residents may see federal wildland fire apparatus and multiple agency logos as part of that interagency response.
