KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Summer may not be finished yet, but parts of eastern Southern Oregon and northern California could wake up to a distinctly fall-like morning Wednesday.
The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a Frost Advisory for portions of Klamath, Lake, and Modoc counties as a cooler air mass settles into the region and clearing skies allow temperatures to drop overnight.
The advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday, with temperatures expected to fall between roughly 33 and 38 degrees in some colder locations.
That may be enough for frost to form, especially in low-lying areas and other spots that tend to cool quickly overnight.
For residents, that means Wednesday morning could bring more than just an extra layer on the way out the door.
Sensitive garden plants, crops, pets, and livestock that are not accustomed to the cold could be affected if temperatures fall toward freezing.
The National Weather Service is encouraging people to pay attention to local conditions and take steps Tuesday evening to protect anything vulnerable to the sudden chill.

Where frost is possible
The advisory covers a broad stretch east of the Cascades.
In Klamath County, communities within the advisory include Crescent, Chemult, Sprague River, Beatty, Bly, Dairy, Bonanza, and Lorella.
Farther north, portions of Lake County are included around Fort Rock, Christmas Valley, Silver Lake, and areas east of Lakeview.
In northern California, the advisory includes parts of Modoc County, including Alturas, Likely, Canby, and Lookout.
Not every neighborhood within the advisory will necessarily see frost. Temperatures can vary considerably over short distances, especially between exposed higher terrain and sheltered valleys.

By sunrise Wednesday, some residents may be scraping frost from windshields or finding a thin white coating across lawns and gardens.
For growers and gardeners, the safest move is to prepare before temperatures fall.
Covering tender plants, moving potted plants indoors or into a protected space, and making sure pets and livestock have appropriate shelter can help prevent damage during the coldest hours of the morning.
