SWAT Standoff Ends Two-Week Manhunt in Grants Pass
Police say the suspect was found hiding in an RV near Cloverlawn nearly two weeks after an alleged carjacking and pursuit

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Anthony Teal, 36, was arrested Tuesday after barricading himself inside an RV near Cloverlawn, ending a nearly two-week search that began after a series of alleged crimes and a dangerous pursuit through Grants Pass.
Grants Pass police said reports of suspicious activity Tuesday morning led investigators to believe Teal may have been hiding in the Cloverlawn area.
Later that afternoon, a resident reported that someone was likely inside an RV on his property.
Because deputies suspected Teal could be inside, Josephine County sheriff’s deputies cautiously approached the RV. Police said Teal barricaded himself inside the bathroom and refused initial attempts to negotiate his surrender.
After a prolonged period without Teal voluntarily leaving the RV, deputies introduced chemical agents while negotiations continued.
Josephine County Sheriff’s Office detectives, the Grants Pass SWAT team, and the Grants Pass Crisis Negotiation Team responded to assist. American Medical Response medics also staged nearby in case medical assistance was needed.
Teal was ultimately taken into custody without further incident.
Six charges filed after arrest
Teal was lodged at the Josephine County Jail on charges of fourth-degree assault involving domestic violence, strangulation, menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree robbery, and unlawful use of a vehicle.
Grants Pass police said additional allegations of failure to perform the duties of a driver to injured persons and attempting to elude will be referred to the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office.
The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office will separately handle any criminal charges stemming from Tuesday’s barricade.

Search began after July 30 incidents

Police had been searching for Teal since July 30, when officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance in the 1400 block of Northeast Meier Drive.
Investigators said they developed probable cause to arrest Teal on allegations of strangulation and menacing, but he had already fled before officers arrived.
Less than an hour later, police received a report of a vehicle being stolen near Northeast D Street and Beacon Drive.
According to police, Teal allegedly pulled a driver from the vehicle and accelerated while the man was still holding onto it. The stolen vehicle then struck another motorist before Teal allegedly drove backward while the original driver was being dragged.
The driver eventually freed himself and was treated by American Medical Response for undisclosed injuries.
A Josephine County sheriff’s deputy spotted the stolen vehicle minutes later near the railroad bridge on Grants Pass Parkway and attempted a traffic stop.
Police said Teal fled and drove into oncoming traffic as the pursuit approached the South Y intersection. The deputy ended the pursuit because of the danger to other motorists.
The stolen vehicle was later found crashed and abandoned near Leonard Road and Willow Lane. Teal had fled on foot before officers arrived.
A large search involving Grants Pass police, the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, K-9 teams, a drone, the Grants Pass Major Crimes Unit, and the Rogue Area Drug Enforcement team did not locate him.
Citizen tips credited in arrest
Grants Pass police said detectives and other local law enforcement officers continued following tips and information in the days after the July 30 incidents.
The department credited residents who reported Teal’s suspected activity Tuesday with helping authorities locate and arrest him.
Police also said people who knowingly helped Teal evade arrest could face charges.
