Motorcyclist Killed in High Speed Crash on US 101 Near Cape Ferrelo
OSP says the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed before a three vehicle collision

BROOKINGS, Ore. — A 36 year old motorcyclist from Sisters was killed Sunday in a three vehicle crash on Highway 101 near Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint in Curry County, according to Oregon State Police.
The crash was reported at approximately 12:38 p.m. Aug. 9 near milepost 352, within the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor between Brookings and Gold Beach.
According to the preliminary investigation, a black Triumph motorcycle driven by Louis Henry Vowell III was traveling north on Highway 101 at a high rate of speed when Vowell attempted to overtake multiple vehicles in a passing lane.
OSP said a gray Mazda CX-5 driven by Russell Keith Moore, 56, of Pulaski, Arkansas, was turning west into Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint when the motorcycle entered the passing lane and struck the rear of the Mazda.
The collision threw Vowell from the motorcycle.
Investigators said Vowell was then struck by a gray Mercedes Sprinter van driven by Jeffrey Alan Ludwick, 58, of Rogue River.
Vowell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Moore and two adult passengers in the Mazda were not injured. Ludwick and an adult passenger in the Mercedes were also reportedly uninjured.
Highway 101 was impacted for approximately two hours while emergency crews responded and investigators worked at the scene.
Oregon State Police was assisted by the Curry County Sheriff’s Office, Cape Ferrelo Rural Fire Department, Brookings Fire & Rescue, Cal-Ore Life Flight, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The incident remains under investigation.
