Mount Shasta Vista Shooting Sends Man to Hospital, Leads to Arrest

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. — A shooting near Mount Shasta Vista sent a man to the hospital and led to the arrest of a neighboring property owner after Siskiyou County deputies investigated conflicting accounts of what happened.
The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office was notified Sept. 5 that a gunshot victim had arrived at Fairchild Medical Center.
Deputies found 49-year-old Baojue Lin of Elk Grove with birdshot injuries to his head, shoulder, face, and torso.
Lin told investigators he had been cooking breakfast at his father’s property around 10:30 a.m. when he heard his dogs barking and then heard gunfire outside.
When he went to investigate, Lin said he was struck by several shotgun pellets. He then drove himself to Fairchild Medical Center for treatment.
Lin told deputies he could not identify the shooter, but believed it was one of two brothers who lived on an adjacent property along Karina Drive near County Road A-12.
Deputies went to the neighboring property and contacted 39-year-old Russell Asher of Montague.
According to the sheriff’s office, Asher acknowledged firing multiple rounds after Lin’s dog ran toward his property line. He also told deputies that he fired at Lin because Lin was shooting at him with a handgun.
Investigators searched both properties but said they found no evidence supporting Asher’s account that Lin had fired a handgun.
Deputies did recover Asher’s firearm and spent rounds they said were connected to the shooting.
Asher was arrested and booked into the Siskiyou County Jail on suspicion of assault with a firearm and battery causing great bodily injury.
