Medford Utility Bills Rise in August: What the Charge Covers

MEDFORD, Ore. — People living in single-family homes in Medford will see a higher city utility bill beginning in August.
The monthly charge increased from $76.53 to $85.91 on July 1. Because the city bills after services are provided, August statements will be the first to show the new amount.
The increase adds $9.38 per month to the city bill.
That bill pays for sewer service, public safety, storm drains, street maintenance and parks. It does not include the drinking water delivered to a home, which is billed separately by Medford Water.
The largest part of the increase is tied to sewer collection and wastewater treatment. That portion of the bill rose by $3.96.
Medford says the additional money is needed for upgrades at the Regional Water Reclamation Facility in White City. The plant treats wastewater from Medford and nearby communities before releasing treated water into the Rogue River.

The city says changes are needed to meet stricter environmental rules for phosphorus and nitrogen. The current treatment system cannot meet the newer limits without major improvements.
The public safety portion of the bill increased by $3.08. That money supports police, fire, emergency medical response, public safety buildings and the city’s Livability Team.
The remaining increase is spread across parks, storm drains and street maintenance.

The full monthly charge now includes $39.05 for sewer service, $22.23 for public safety, $9.63 for storm drains, $8.31 for parks and $6.69 for street maintenance.
Those charges are generally fixed for single-family homes. Using less water may lower a household’s separate Medford Water bill, but it will not lower the City of Medford utility fee.
Residents should see the new $85.91 total on bills issued in August. Customers who receive paper statements may also have a separate $3 paper-billing fee.
